The World in Parts
As a legally blind artist, my relationship with the visual world demands an intimacy with detail. This unavoidable aspect of my existence profoundly shapes my artistic practice, compelling me to engage with the world in "smaller chunks at a time."
Whether through the brushstrokes of my paintings or the intricate layering in my collages, my work is a testament to this piecemeal exploration of the world, where the whole emerges only after a meticulous engagement with its parts. Utilizing a variety of mediums —including painting, digital illustration, and both digital and analog collage — I examine the relationship between perception and reality, challenging and redefining the boundaries of visual expression.
In my paintings, I combine disparate elements such as rocks and bones to capture the essence of nature's beautifully unique formations and the complexities of natural landscapes. These works are not just representations of the physical world; they are imbued with a deeper exploration of how the natural environment shapes and is shaped by the forces that govern it.
Collage offers me a playground for dissecting and reassembling the human figure, exploring the nuanced layers of identity and originality. Influenced by my childhood fascination with fashion and lifestyle magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, and ELLE, my figure-based collages are a commentary on the pervasive impact of media on self-perception and societal norms. Through the act of deconstruction and reconstruction, I distort once-familiar forms, inviting viewers to question and reconsider their own understandings of identity.
At the same time, I interrogate the narratives constructed and conveyed by media. Through the lens of collage, I'm able to scrutinize the complex interplay of identity, society, and media, peeling back layers to reveal the underlying messages that are often internalized yet go unquestioned.
My journey into digital illustration is an extension of my lifelong interest in fashion. Fashion, in its most intrinsic form, is a language of identity, communicated through the choices we make in color, shape, and texture. My digital works are an exploration of contemporary fashion, where each iteration of a piece is an experiment in mood and emotion, achieved through variations in patterns, color schemes, and backgrounds.
The fusion of fashion illustration with collage techniques allows me to blend the ephemeral nature of fashion with the tangible aspects of collage, creating a hybrid form that challenges traditional notions of both mediums. This convergence is not merely aesthetic but is deeply rooted in my personal narrative of using art as a means to examine the world more closely. Art, for me, is a tool to perceive and appreciate the array of colors, textures, shapes, and forms that constitute our reality.
